For centuries, mankind has looked up at the night sky and contemplated visiting the stars and celestial bodies that exist in the space beyond our planet. While telescopes and other equipment allowed early astronomers to peer into the cosmos and advance our knowledge of the solar system, it was only in the last century that we have been able to launch objects, and people, into space.
For many Ohioans and their families, one of the highlights of the summer season is a trip to the local county fair. Nearly 100 local and independent fairs will be held this summer, providing residents and visitors with the opportunity to enjoy livestock shows, arts and crafts displays, entertainment acts and other activities while enjoying food and other products grown on Ohio farms.
The lazy, hazy days of summer are here, and the warmer temperatures have many of us turning up the air conditioning and heading to the pool or a movie theater to try and stay cool. Keeping comfortable in this weather can be a challenge, but fortunately there is help available for those Ohioans who are finding it difficult to keep up with increased energy costs this time of year.
Ohioans are saving their dollars, but that doesn’t mean families can’t enjoy prime vacation spots in their own backyards. Across Ohio, you can escape to acres of peaceful woodlands, enjoy the rides and local flavor of area festivals and fairs, or test your knowledge of Buckeye state trivia at the Statehouse museum. Whether you are a thrill seeker or enjoy relaxing in the great outdoors, Ohio has just the escape for you.
Ohio is well-known as the birthplace of seven U.S. presidents and space pioneers Neil Armstrong and John Glenn. What many people may not realize, however, is that our state has also been called home by numerous individuals who would go on to invent items that would promote the progress of science and mankind and inspire future generations of innovators and thinkers. The month of August has been designated National Inventors Month, and as such I would like to take a moment to recognize a few of the many Ohioans whose creativity and technological advancements have helped change our world.
